"Most people would be surprised to learn how many gay cops are out there. Some large city forces have gay and lesbian officers associations."
Aside from physical fitness, James is pursuing a masters in sociology and would like to move into counseling when his police career comes to an end.
"I'll still be very young when my pension comes due, and I don't think I'll want to be a security chief at a supermarket when the day comes."
Of mixed Puerto Rican/Black ancestry, James spends alot of vacation time visiting his relatives on the island.
